Debt consolidation loans

Debt consolidation loans: payments, fees and total cost

One payment can be simpler without being cheaper. Compare what remains on your current debts with a new offer, including its fees, net proceeds and repayment length.

Consolidation is a new borrowing decision. The comparison can show a higher cost or a funding shortfall; a smaller monthly payment alone is not a saving.

How this estimate works

The fixed monthly payment uses the nominal annual interest rate divided by 12. Interest and each balance are rounded to cents for the displayed schedule. Total repayments are the sum of that schedule, including the adjusted final payment. Upfront fees are shown separately and included once in borrowing cost.

Estimated APR uses the entered fee as a finance charge and equal monthly cash flows. It is not a provider’s legally disclosed APR. Irregular payment dates, daily accrual, variable rates, late fees and other contract rules are outside this model. Understand interest, APR and fees.

List debt payoff balances and remaining payments

For each existing debt, record the current payoff figure, regular payment, number of payments left and any charges not included in that schedule. Use current statements or written payoff information, without uploading them here.

A credit card with a changing balance, variable rate and minimum-payment rule does not behave like a fixed installment loan. For a useful comparison, obtain a payoff plan with explicit assumptions or use the card issuer’s figures. Do not estimate an exact payoff by averaging APRs.

Compare a debt consolidation loan with your existing debts

Compare the remaining payments under the existing plan with all payments under the new agreement. If an origination fee is withheld, check whether the net funds actually cover the debts. If fees are financed or paid separately, account for them once in the appropriate place.

The worksheet compares up to four fixed-payment debts with a hypothetical fixed monthly loan. Enter nominal interest, term and the stated fee treatment. It reports the payment change, total future payments and any gap between net proceeds and balances. It does not price an actual offer.

Existing fixed-payment debts
Additional debts — leave an unused row entirely blank
Funds reserved for an upfront fee
Existing remaining scheduled payments$3,600.00
Payoff amounts to replace$3,000.00
New net proceeds$3,000.00
Existing debts end after12 months
Initial monthly payment reduction$202.19
Old total minus new full outflow−$1,094.51
  • This example does not lower total future payments. A smaller initial payment can extend the debt and increase total cost.
  • Initial payment reduction applies only at the beginning. The table shows old debts ending at different months. These rows support fixed-payment debts; revolving card minimums need a separate payoff model.

A lower consolidation payment can mean a higher total cost

Lengthening repayment can reduce the monthly amount while increasing the total you pay. Look at both results. Also consider how long you would remain in debt and what happens if you continue using paid-off credit lines.

For example, comparing two user-entered plans can produce “lower payment, higher total cost.” That is a valid outcome, not an error to hide. A worthwhile decision depends on the complete terms and your circumstances; no saving is guaranteed.

Debt consolidation loans for bad credit: checks and creditor payments

For debt consolidation loans with bad credit, check the actual eligibility and inquiry process. Queries about no-credit-check consolidation do not establish such an offer. Confirm what information is reviewed and whether the terms could change after verification.

Ask whether you must pay creditors yourself or the funding provider sends payments directly. Keep existing payments in place until the relevant creditor confirms receipt and the remaining balance. Do not assume a new application has closed an old debt.

Debt consolidation versus settlement, counseling and credit repair

Consolidation uses new borrowing to repay existing debts. Credit counseling helps with budgeting and may include a debt-management plan. Settlement seeks a different arrangement for what creditors receive; credit repair concerns credit-report matters. These services are not interchangeable.

The CFPB explains the distinctions and related risks. This page provides a comparison worksheet; it does not establish that the site offers counseling, settlement or credit-repair services.

RouteMain purpose
Consolidation loanNew credit repays existing debts; evaluate the new agreement.
Credit counselingBudget education and potentially a debt-management arrangement.
Debt settlementSeek an arrangement about the amount creditors receive.
Credit repairAddress credit-report matters; it is not a debt payoff loan.

When debt consolidation does not fit: hardship help and counseling

If net funds do not cover the intended balances, total cost rises or the new payment still does not fit, pause the financing decision. Contact existing creditors about hardship arrangements and consider an appropriate credit-counseling resource.

Do not add a new medical bill, repair or rent expense to the consolidation total without identifying it separately. The medical guide and rent options may identify alternatives before those expenses become new credit debts.

Debt consolidation loan questions

Does a lower debt consolidation payment mean a cheaper loan?

No. A longer term can lower the payment and increase total repayment. Compare both the monthly change and the remaining total cost.

How do origination fees affect the amount available for debts?

A withheld fee reduces net funds available to pay creditors. A financed fee increases the balance on which repayment may be calculated. Check the agreement and avoid counting a fee twice.

Is consolidation the same as debt settlement?

No. Consolidation is new borrowing used to repay debts. Settlement seeks a different payment arrangement with creditors, while credit counseling and credit repair have other functions.

What should I compare when seeking debt consolidation with bad credit?

Compare actual eligibility, inquiry stages, net proceeds, total payments and fees. No-credit-check or guaranteed wording does not establish a suitable or available product.
