Costs and terms to compare

A useful comparison starts with a written offer for the amount and schedule you are considering. This page does not publish a rate or fee schedule for a particular lender. Use it to organize the terms presented to you.

Record the money available and the money due

  • Amount received: the money available to cover the expense after any deductions.
  • Fees: identify charges paid upfront, withheld from proceeds or added to the financed balance.
  • APR and rate: copy the stated figures and their labels. Do not substitute a monthly rate for an annual figure.
  • Payment schedule: record every due date and amount, including any different final payment.
  • Total repayment: compare all scheduled payments and any separate upfront charges without counting the same fee twice.

Check the conditions around the numbers

Ask whether the rate can change, when interest starts, how a late or returned payment is treated, and what process applies to early repayment. Read any automatic payment authorization separately. Request clarification of a charge or deadline that is not clear in the documents.

Compare offers for the same expense and usable amount. A longer term may reduce an individual payment while adding more payment dates. A short schedule may have a lower total but put more pressure on the next pay period.

Use estimates carefully

A calculator result is a planning estimate, not a disclosure, approval or payoff statement. The tool's assumptions may differ from the actual agreement. Keep ordinary living costs and existing debts alongside the proposed payment before deciding whether it fits.

For a specific bill, use the relevant worksheet: medical expenses, auto repairs or funeral costs. If comparing a new loan with existing debts, use the consolidation guide and obtain current payoff figures.

How this estimate works

The fixed monthly payment uses the nominal annual interest rate divided by 12. Interest and each balance are rounded to cents for the displayed schedule. Total repayments are the sum of that schedule, including the adjusted final payment. Upfront fees are shown separately and included once in borrowing cost.

Estimated APR uses the entered fee as a finance charge and equal monthly cash flows. It is not a provider’s legally disclosed APR. Irregular payment dates, daily accrual, variable rates, late fees and other contract rules are outside this model. Understand interest, APR and fees.
