A responsible borrowing checklist

A careful borrowing decision connects a specific expense with a realistic repayment plan. This checklist supports that review. It does not describe underwriting rules or promise how an application will be assessed.

Define the need

Write down what is due, when it is due and the amount already covered. Separate essential immediate costs from optional additions. For a multi-stage expense, map the payment dates instead of assuming everything must be financed at once. The moving budget and dental payment guide give examples of staged planning.

Test the repayment in your own budget

Include existing debts and ordinary household costs. Use confirmed income and retain room for expenses that vary. If a proposed payment depends on another loan, an uncertain refund or missing a different bill, pause and review the plan again. A calculator cannot determine the right decision for your circumstances.

Identify the agreement and the business

Before submitting sensitive information, read the identity and privacy information presented in the application. Before accepting credit, review the amount received, charges, payment schedule and the name and contact details on the agreement. Ask about anything you do not understand. Website guide text does not establish licensing, availability in a location or a business relationship.

Plan for questions after signing

Keep a copy of the agreement and payment schedule somewhere you can find them. If you anticipate difficulty, contact the business identified in those documents and ask what options it can discuss. Obtain any agreed change in writing rather than assuming the original due date has moved.

Review payment alternatives before committing and use the loan management checklist for an existing agreement. These steps help organize your questions without collecting personal financial documents on this page.
